The One Percent Show: Vinod Sethi on Listening to Your Inner Voice

Welcome to the second episode of The One Percent Show with Vishal Khandelwal. This show is an open-ended exploration into the minds of the wisest people around to help us learn to think, invest, and live each day a little, as little as one percent, better.

My guest today is Vinod Sethi. Vinod served as Managing Director of Morgan Stanley Investment Management, until February 2001 and served as its Chief Investment Officer and Portfolio Manager for 12 years. He is a graduate in Chemical Engineering and holds a degree in B. Tech from the Indian Institute of Technology Mumbai and an MBA in Finance from Stern School of Business, New York University.

Vinod has maintained a low public profile all these years, but he is a veteran in the Indian equity investment space with an experience of more than three decades. The little I have read and known about him, I find a man who has not been just a multidisciplinary thinker but also a true Karmayogi who has combined his inner voice at a number of times with mindful decisions and rightful efforts.

When I was studying about Vinod’s life and experience, I could remember a 1910 speech delivered by the former US President, Theodore Roosevelt and which was titled The Man in the Arena. Roosevelt said and I quote, “It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly.”

We cover a lot in today’s show, and I am sure this conversation is going to teach all its listeners a lot about life than just thinking, learning, and investing.

To Parents, With Love

“Study hard, Vishal! You have to become ‘something’ in life someday. Don’t waste your time roaming around here and there with your friends. Remember that these are the two most important years of your life. Go and make full use of them.”

These were my father’s words as I was packing my bags. I was leaving for Mumbai to attend an MBA course. This was the year 2001.

I had heard such a sermon from him so many times in my life earlier. Being a civil engineer and a topper from his batch, my father was a well-educated and well-read man. He had been a very caring father, but in those days, I often took his extra care for me as interference in my life’s decisions.

He knew the payback for hard work, despite the fact that he himself could not practice engineering due to the needs of joining the family business. But he was very particular that his son needs to study hard and become “something in life someday.”

The Joy of Being

Life is in living NOW.

It’s all about the choices we make now, the habits we form now, the actions we take now, and the enlightenment we receive now.

Regretting about the past is like wasting time and energy on the impossible. And worrying about the future is like having no belief in your capabilities.

However, we don’t appreciate the living present because our ‘monkey minds,’ as Buddhists call them, vault from thought to thought like monkeys swinging from tree to tree.
